Mission

The APA Faculty Development Special Interest Group
(FacDevSIG) exists to provide a professional home for pediatric medical educators interested in faculty development. Our focus is on the members' roles as faculty developers, not merely the members' own personal faculty development.

Creating Individual Faculty Development Plan

APA Educational Scholars Program

The mission of the APA Educational Scholars Program is to assist the membership in developing themselves as productive, advancing and fulfilled faculty members and to increase the quality, status and visibility of pediatric educators in academia.

Six-Domains of Faculty Development.

The career development needs of most academic pediatric faculty members fall into six domains. For each domain, we have provided a set of common faculty development goals. We recommend that APA members review and adapt the goal sets to create their own plans for personal career development.

Annual Report

Co-chairs: Natalie Burman, Naval Medical Center San Diego; Chris Peltier, Cincinnati Children's; Priti Bhansali, Children's National

SIG purpose/mission: To provide a professional home for pediatric medical educators interested in faculty development. Our focus is on the members' roles as faculty developers, not merely the members' own personal faculty development.

Current SIG goals:

  1. Expand our membership by providing an academic home for faculty developers and recruiting interested trainees and junior faculty interested in faculty development and medical education
  2. Create collaboration opportunities for scholarly work
  3. Expand our repository for key references

Annual summary:
We also are proud to have selected two new SIG Co-Chairs (Drs. Peltier and Bhansali) from an outstanding applicant pool. We had an engaging Faculty Development SIG Session at PAS 2017 discussing common challenges in faculty development that impact different academic settings. We had five SIG members present faculty development innovations in small groups followed by discussion. As a large group, we tackled three challenging questions faced by many faculty developers to implement new faculty development innovations, addressing the faculty development needs across institutional barriers, and how to keep current as a faculty developer. Our attendance was 24, stable over the two PAS meetings. The feedback from the attendees was very positive and evidence of great engagement from the membership. There were several collaborative discussions on potential future directions.

Other groups that work in your area of interest: Other SIGs we have considered collaborating with in the future include Evidence-Based Medicine, Medical Student Education and Teaching in Community Settings.

October 2017 Newsletter

The Faculty Development SIG is pleased to announce our new Co-Chairs, Prit Bhansali and Chris Peltier. Prit currently is the Associate Program Director of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at Children's National Medical Center and co-leads the Faculty Development Program for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Division there. She brings enthusiasm and creativity to the SIG and a willingness to develop the SIG to meet the interests and needs of our membership. Chris is the Rotation Director for the Community Continuity Clinic and Director of Faculty Development at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center working with hospital and community-based pediatricians as well as allied health care educators. He brings experience as the former Co-Chair of the Teaching in Community Settings SIG and is interested in furthering SIG networking and collaboration among other SIGs. Welcome Prit and Chris!

Thank you for your contributions to our recent SIG needs assessment survey! Based on popular demand, our PAS 2018 SIG meeting will focus on Promotion of the Clinician Educator including mentoring, sponsorship, building an educator's portfolio, and challenges unique to the clinician educator in a traditional academic setting. We also received input from several of you who would be interested in collaborating. Stay tuned as we begin our plans and reach out to all interested members.

Again, we will be sure to work in time to network and get to know each other better.
