SIG purpose/mission:
The Literacy Promotion SIG provides an opportunity to collaborate on early literacy and parenting research to help inform community outreach, health promotion, and health policy activity in these areas.

Current SIG goals:

  • To facilitate exchange of ideas between researchers, educators and advocates in best practices in early literacy promotion, parenting, and school readiness
  • To maintain the presence of early literacy promotion as a focus at academic training centers
  • To support the development of pediatric providers who are able to integrate early literacy promotion as a social determinant of health in their communities

Annual summary:
The Literacy Development Programs in Primary Care SIG session met in Toronto at the 2017 Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting.  Our keynote this year was “Global Literacy Promotion: Perspectives from the Canadian Healthcare System”, led by Alyson Shaw from the University of Ottawa and Canadian Pediatric Society.  Joining her were Jan Lariviere (Montreal Children’s), Gabriella Jacob (University of Toronto), Celia Rodd (University of Manitoba), and Karen Steinbach (SickKids, Toronto).   We also heard from Reach Out and Read Young Investigator awardees. This year's YIA awardee, Erin Roby, described her project that investigated the impact of parental book reading strategies on low-income children’s social-emotional outcomes.

The Lit Net research network was introduced and the national Reach Out and Read research strategy was presented.  Nikki Shearman at the National ROR Center offered to help create a database of literacy-related research tools.  We also learned that a formal vote was needed for a name change and "Literacy Promotion SIG" was voted in as the new name. Perri Klass then led a dynamic open discussion and many stayed after the formal meeting ended to continue conversations and make new connections.  It was great to see everyone!

To help stay in touch, please sign up for the Reach Out and Read newsletters and join the AAP Council on Early Childhood. Please continue to share new ideas and updates on ongoing projects! We hope to see you again next year if not before!
